Bhutan Players to look out for

29-Aug-2018

Trevor Morgan is maintaining cautious optimism and believes a semi-final appearance in the upcoming SAFF Suzuki Cup would define success for his Bhutan team. Drawn in Group A alongside the host Bangladesh, as well as Pakistan and Nepal, here are the players who are crucial in the Dragon Boys’ victory plot.

Chencho Gyeltshen
Gyeltshen has been hailed as the Bhutanese Ronaldo and will be one of the most watched players in the competition. The player, affectionately called CG7, will carry the hopes of the nation and arrives in the tournament full of confidence after a high profile move to Indian Super League side Bengaluru FC. Most recently, he scored seven times and provided two assists in the title-winning season for Minerva Punjab, illustrating his attacking prowess.

The 22-year-old pacey attacker takes advantage of his speed to quickly get behind the defence and open up space for his teammates. It would be interesting to see how coach Morgan deploys him in the team line-up and utilises the different facets of his game.

Orgyen Tshering
The 18-year-old has already accumulated five caps for the national team, and his youthful energy in the midfield will be important for the team. Tshering plays as an attacking midfielder and helps the team with quick transitions from defence to attack. The player has a lot of potential and playing in his first ever major international tournament will go a long way towards helping him develop and improve his game.

Jigme Tshering Dorji
It was Tshering Dorji’s late winner back in 2015, in the first leg in Colombo during a World Cup 2018 qualifier against Sri Lanka, that brought immense joy to the Bhutanese fans as Bhutan was then ranked 209 (out of 209) in the FIFA World Ranking. The multifaceted player will hope he can recreate the moment and help execute his coach’s vision for the team and bring more joy to his nation.
